Without wanting to spark some existential conversation about What Techno Is, Berlin minimal something duo Kollektiv Turmstrasse arguably broke the mould of their style with this 2010 masterpiece that owes as much to the likes of Ellen Allien as it does Kruder & Dorfmeister and Compost Records. Saturated in a dark, high tech soul, while it opts to shuffle, glide and whisper, rather than bang, drive and pound, it clearly sets out its stall in a live instrumentation corner of the German capital’s most iconic sound. Stunning warm moments like the lackadaisical keyboard-focused dance lounge jazz of ‘Heimat’, the sticky garage blues of ‘Was Bleibt’, or the smoky, dubby piano house of ‘Deine Distanz’ have not lost even half an ounce of their original magic. And those are really just the surface level big hitters. Dive in deeper and you start to realise just how beautiful and beguiling the whole thing is. – Juno
