Arriving in March 2020 – a moment in time when most people probably weren’t focused on the release schedule given the world, or at least the Western Hemisphere, was on the cusp of previously unthinkable lockdowns – Abolition of the Royal Familia deserves huge props for a number of reasons. Firstly, it reflects acid house-ambient legends The Orb’s staunchly political undertones. Secondly, it’s their 16th studio album, which is a triumph in itself. And, finally, it’s a really, really strong record. Now we have the appropriately titled Guillotine Mixes as a standalone release, and what a beautiful successor to the throne it is. Drafting the likes of Violeta Vicci, Andy Falconer and David Harrow, the tracks span retro sci fi Italo, dub-ambient, half-time dnb, progressive and deep house, spatial drone, and cosmic slo-mo. A marvellous reflection of the sounds that have come and lasted during The Orb’s storied and utterly incomparable journey to date.
